Able and Available for Part Time Work

Good Afternoon, I have been denied un-employment benefits from Maryland, because I was not Able and Available to return to work. I was a full-time Substitute Teacher and did not return to work because I relocated to Florida to care for a very sick relative. I have been doing all of the job searches every week and filing the claims every 2 weeks as requested by law. I am available to work on a part-time basis, but I was told I was not going to receive benefits because I am not able and available.

So I have faxed an appeal disagreeing with the decision.

Here's the MD unemployment insurance precedent manual, to help with your appeal. If you are limiting yourself to part-time you need to look to see if the law provides an exception to be available for full-time work.

Are you certain that "reasonable assurance" will not be an issue on your hearing notice?
