Can I collect unemployment if I have been fired for a family member being sick

by Tom
(united states)

Can I still receive unemployment benefits if I was fired do to a family member being sick and not being able to work. It is going on three weeks now that I was last at work they told me I could be on a leave of absence for two weeks. But my dad is still sick and I am not able to return to work yet. They told me if I was not back this monday the 1st of february that I would be terminated.

Hi Tom,

Are you entitled to FMLA protection? If I were you, and you are not, I would send an email to the employer requesting another extension for personal leave and detailing the need for it .. so you at least have something to provide to the state that shows you were fired to confront a potential job abandonment claim by the employer.
