Eligiable for UI? Massachusetts

by Taylor Doucette
(Lynn Mass)

I have worked at an insurance company in Boston for close to 7 years now. I started as a summer help position because my dad also worked at the company. When I finished high school I started working their full time and have had a couple promotions over the years due to my performance. In March of 2007, my dad passed away due to a heart attack on the way home from work. Since then, it has been very difficult to deal with going to work everyday without him as we commuted together. I have tried to keep my job and keep telling myself that it will get easier but no such luck. I really need to quit my job and start fresh someplace else. Would I be eligible for UI??

Hi Taylor,

I do believe your reason for quitting would be disqualifying.

But if you had medical documentation from a professional advising you quit because of depression due to your circumstances...it would probably work.

Quitting due to stress of bank conversion - Massachusetts unemployment
by: Anonymous

I have worked for my bank for 3 years in MA. I work in customer service over the phone. They recentley got bought out by another bank. They did a huge system conversion and our customers are very very unhappy with it. Our whole system has changed and I do not think we had enough training on all we need to know which I did say to my supervisor. I am under alot of stress working here 6 months pregnant. Our call volume has gone up very high and everyone of our calls is a very angry customer who yells at me. It went from a great place to work to horrible place because of all these changes. I hate answering the phone now. Also I have gotten 2 written warnings from my supervisor due to being out for reasons of being sick because of my pregnancy. I gave my two weeks notice and told them why I was leaving. I do plan on filing for unemployment asap. DO you think I could get it?

Very doubtful because you didn't take any steps to preserve your employment, you didn't request a leave of absence nor did you avail yourself of the FMLA protection I'm sure you could have since you did work for a bank.

And Massachusetts is what's know as a claimant friendly state, but even Massachusetts requires that you try to preserve your employment. If you don't believe me .. "click here for the Massachusetts service rep unemployment handbook
