Unemployed Stories

I am a Guidance Counselor in NY and may be laid off in June. I have other responsibilities in my school that I am considered an indepedent consultant.

If I lose my job I will have to quit my other jobs as independent consultant. How would this effect unemployment benefits? Should I quit them now so not to effect anything in the event that I am laid off?

Are you making this assumption that you must quit any and all efforts that might be considered self-employment per this special bulletin issued by NY on Self Employment?

One question about unemployment benefits, almost always lead to more unemployment questions for me.

I am employed as an independent consultant because of my position as a Guidance Counselor. I run several programs in our district and was appointed to them via board approval. However, they are paid by outside vendors and not by my school district. If I were to get laid off, I would have to resign from these positions, and I don't want that to have an effect on unemployment.
