Unemployed Stories

i live in nj and im 17 and want to collect unemployment, can i do that?

by natalie monteiro
(new jersey)

I just lost my job and I'm living on my own am I able to collect unemployment even though I'm only seventeen years old.

Hi Natalie,

If you are of legal age to work, you should be able to collect unemployment if:

1. You have sufficient wages to qualify monetarily for unemployment.

2. You lost your job for a qualifying reason.

3. You remain able and available for suitable work.

Your age should not be a stumbling block.

Natalie, you should be certain to check out all the resources your state makes available for finding a new job .. and paying for school while you are waiting for the determinations.

It's very possible that you could receive unemployment benefits .. if all goes well .. while attending school.
