I was last employed in Nevada in Oct. 2003 Can I collect unemployment?

Q: I was last employed in Nevada in Oct. 2003 Can I collect unemployment?

I moved to Florida in Feb. 2004. I looked for work, but then my husband underwent five significant surgeries between 2005 and 2006. I started to look again, but then I had two surgeries one in 2007 with a long recovery and another surgery in 2008 with another significant length for recovery. I started looking for work in 2009 but cannot find any work at all. I never applied for unemployment after leaving Nevada. Is there any help for me??

Hi Marge,

No, I'm afraid unemployment is not an option for you.

The standard base period for unemployment can only reach back a maximum of 18 months relative to the date of filing.

There are some states that have what's called an extended base period as an option that reaches back further, but that is usually something used when a person has not been able and available for an extended period of time due to some personal injury that happened while on the job and has lost there job due to the limitations of worker's comp laws .. or also in the case of being terminated at the end of an FML, but still not medically released for a longer than usual period of time.
