Is California out of money to pay unemployment benefits extensions?

by Eileen Migdal
(Kennedale, TX)

This question needs some responses from those receiving extensions.

Hi -

I have been receiving benefits from California and I am on my last extension. I mailed my form on 6/29 priority mail and have proof of delivery. The form was received July 1st and was filled out correctly. I should have received a check by 7/7 or 7/8. As of today- 7/15 - no check. I have tried everyday to get thru by phone to no avail. I have e-mailed them twice and still no response. Do you know if they have run out of money? Have you heard of anyone else having this problem?
I live in Texas but worked in California for over 5 years. I had to leave the state due to my husband's job relocation and thru no fault of my own. Therefore, I was able to collect unemployment.

Hi Eileen,

No, they aren't going to stop paying benefits .. even if they run out of money. The federal government (which the extension is probably from) will not allow this .. When a state's fund is depleting and it hits the "trigger" the state is "forced" to borrow money from the feds.

California seems to have more and different kinds of extensions than other states. My knowledge about extensions is weak .. they were almost unheard of up until this economic disaster or the politically correct term "economic downturn". When I think of that term I get a mental picture of a contortionist with their head up their .. you know what.

I can't tell you what the hold up is. But we can ask what other people are experiencing and hope that someone is willing to share:)
