How many days or hours do I have to work for an employer before I can collect unemployment ben efits?

by jeanette

(west palm beach, florida)

I will be leaving a job to take a job with another company. It is a temp to permenant position. But this job may only last for 3 months. Will I be able to collect unemployment benefits should I be laid off?

Jeanette,

It would depend on whether Florida finds that you quit the previous job with or without good cause.

The disqualification for a voluntary quit in Florida is …

1. Disqualification for voluntarily quitting continues for the full period of unemployment next ensuing after he or she has left his or her full-time, part-time, or temporary work voluntarily without good cause and until the individual has earned income equal to or in excess of 17 times his or her weekly benefit amount.

In order for you to access those wage credits from the job you are quitting, you will have had to of earned at least 17 times your weekly benefits amount in the new employment .. that is the only way to purge the disqualification.
