Business closed and I lost my jop

by Sharon

(Dayton, TN USA)

I worked for 20 years for my husband’s small company as secretary and took our autistic/mentally disabled child to work with me. Our company has had to close due to the economy and everyone is drawing unemployment. I received notice that I am probably ineligible because I cannot get another job because of caring for my son. He is 37 years old now and draws SSI. My husband and I are both unemployed now and I really need this money. We live in TN. Where do I stand?

You must be able and available for “suitable work” and for you that is as a secretary. But given that you need to take care of your son full-time .. that excludes you from collecting.

It is a basic condition required for collecting unemployment.
