can i draw unemployment if my plant shuts down for a week?

by falisha

(michigan)

If a company shuts down for 1 week an there is no possible work is the company able to deny unemployment for that week? they are trying to make us use our vacation days or take the week unpaid? i have been there for 3 yrs. can they do that? i live in michigan.

Hi Falisha,

I really don’t know. My first thought was sure go ahead and open a claim because Michigan doesn’t have a one week waiting period, but I’m not sure it would be considered a lack of work .. although I’m leaning that way.

I suggest you call the state for some clarification, I’m sure lots of people would be interested to know if they can be forced to use their earned vacation time at the employer’s convenience.
