Filling a maternity leave job vacancy temporarily

by Rusty

(Texas)

If I am currently collecting unemployment and I accept(if I am chosen) a maternity leave position in a school corporation will I be able to collect unemployment again once the maternity leave ends? It will be a different school corporation than the one that laid me off.

Hi Rusty,

Yes you should be able to start collecting again as long as this employer doesn’t offer you another position that you don’t want and therefore refuse .. they would most likely tell the state that you refused suitable work .. because although they wouldn’t be charged for any benefits you receive from your current claim, they realize that they might be a “base period employer” should you need to file a new claim at the end of your current benefit year.

This is an inherent danger always when accepting temporary positions.

I’ve moved this to the questions about temporary work.
