Fulltime EE turned Self-Employed – Can I receive unemployment as a self employed person?

Fulltime EE turned Self-Employed – Can I receive unemployment as a self employed person?

I was let go due to lack of work (in Georgia) and received unemployment for five months before starting my own company and landing my first contract. The contract lasted seven months. I’m marketing, but haven’t received additional work. Can I receive unemployment somehow?

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

It varies by state whether someone can receive unemployment benefits after self employment. The USDOL breaks it down by state here. (Go to table 1-7)

But I can tell you already .. I think you have a problem .. even if GA allows corporate officers to collect.

You’re marketing for more work as a self employed person and you haven’t formally closed the business.

I hope you can widen your net and grow that business!
