I am receiving unemployment. If I leave the United States, will I get unemployment benefits while I am away?

by Maria Emma

(California, USA)

Last year, I had a surgery in my country. I have a doctor appointment soon for a check out. Right now I am receiving unemployment. If I leave the United States for two months, will I get unemployment benefits while I am away? What steps do I need to take to not stop receiving unemployment benefits? Will I need to re-open a file claim? What will be the best and the right thing to do in this case? I am in California. Thanks for your answer.

Hi Maria,

No you would not be eligible for benefits while out of the country because you are not abla and available for work nor actively seeking work.

When you do get back you could reopen your claim .. provided your benefit year has not ended while you’ve been gone.
