I go to college in NYS. I quit my job to keep my grades up. Can i collect unemployment?

I go to college in NYS. I quit my job to keep my grades up. Can i collect unemployment?

I was collecting unemployment because my previous job went out of business. I found another job eventually, but it was becoming an issue with school and not having a car made it even harder. I decided to quit because my school load was becoming intense. So I started collecting unemployment again. I received a letter this week saying that my benefits would stop until I clarify me quitting my job. Is quitting because of school a valid reason? thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi Matthew,

No, not in New York. Please see 1715 on this page.

I think the state will find your reason to be personal and non-compelling, but you can research different topics for quitting and see relevant NY decisions page.

Dec 28, 2009 vocational training in New York

by: Anonymous

I am a skilled health care worker who is currently unemployed seeking full time work. Can i attend vocational training in the field that i am already in to advance my skills. Or would that be considered
unavailability to work.

Hi,

I actually think that since you already have experience in a high demand job market that you investigate the options available through the New York DOL

The advantage is that you may be eligible to collect unemployment while attending school and not have to deal with any able and available issue.

Many times it’s just one certification that can make you qualified for a whole new set of jobs.

The government knows this and they know which labor markets are in desperate need of “trained help. Grant money is available for vocational training and if it’s state approved training the possibility of suspending your need to search for a job while going to school increases. I think everyone should at least pay a visit to a state job service center to find out what benefits besides a weekly check are available.
