I was laid off 2 months ago in washington state. Now my employer wants me to work 16 hrs a week. If I refuse can this effect my unemployment benefits?

by judy

(washington state)

my old employer who laid me off from full time employment, wants me to work for 16 a week for 3 weeks. do I have to do it.? And if not will it affect my unemployment benefits.

Hi Judy,

Yes it can. It could be considered a refusal of suitable work. And since it’s the employer who laid you off asking you to come back .. the suitability probably wouldn’t be in question. In addition since the employer is paying for the benefits you are now receiving .. they would have a motive to report your refusal to the state.

You would still be eligible for partial unemployment benefits if you will only be working sixteen hours a week.
