The Government Crackdown on Career Colleges

by Chris – Unemployment-tips.com

(United States)

Beginning July 1, 2011 the US Department of Education will be cracking down on Career Colleges and other learning institutions.

I haven’t trolled through the entire text of the new Gainful Employment Regulations yet, but I will get to it in my spare time and see if I can’t highlight what I think is the most important parts.

But, if you’re unemployed right now and thinking about going to school .. you really shouldn’t feel like you have an option .. not if you will be financing your college with a loan.

Read it before choosing the right school, the right training program, or certification classes you’d like to attend, before you sign your name to any promise to repay a loan for school.

Apparently, the new regulations address some of these career colleges that were receiving federal aid that went out to students as a loan and let us not forget the Pell Grant.

It also seems many of you were not getting what you paid for .. an education and one that would lead to a job.

If you were promised a job or led down a yellow brick road and told the reward of a job was waiting at the Emerald City.. but it wasn’t .. or if you didn’t learn anything, then the new regs are supposed to fix that.

These schools will now also have to be truthful in all the required disclosures as well. So I assume there was some intentional misleading going on .. when advertising.

Seems the federal government doesn’t think potential unemployed students were being fully informed so they made some bad choices and the end result was that there wasn’t gainful employment after they finished school.

Of course this would make student aid loans more difficult for unemployed graduates to repay.

I suspect this is at the heart of this .. If you spend money .. make sure it does what it is intended to do.

Help people find gainful employment.

If anyone out there would like to help me disseminate the changes even, bit by bit .. that would be lovely.

Aug 10, 2011 Misled

by: Anonymous

I was mislead and poorly trained…still got to pay sallie mae though.

And that was part of the problem and the cause for the changes. People were going to some of these career type colleges and then still not able to find work .. so they defaulted on their government student loans.

Well the government didn’t like that .. so the new regulations hold the schools to certain performance levels to continue to be able to offer government loans to students that attend a school.

Everyone’s noticed the changes to the TV commercials .. right?

But Sallie Mae is a fortune 500 company that provides saving plans and private student loans .. isn’t it?

Just saying .. you probably won’t count when it comes time to crunching performance numbers .. for the new Gainful Employment regulations.

I went to a Career College, received poor training, then tried to go back to get better training as the school revamped itself so they said, when i got there. they said all my college credits were no good as it had been over 5 years since i was in college. really! I was 28 when i went to this school. now 50 and they tell me i have no credits, but still got to pay off the loans! How does the new rules help us who got screwed over?
