Trade Schools – New York, Is quitting to attend a trade school good cause for unemployment benefits?

by AH

(Brooklyn, NY)

Hi,

I am in New York and I quit my FT job in December 08 to attend a trade school. The hours I attended school were a 5 day a week, 9-5, 40 hour work week. I was initially approved for UI and then 2 weeks later subsequently denied. I am requesting an appeal and hearing, but what are my chances of winning?? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi AH,

Generally speaking, there are very few circumstances under which quitting to attend trade school will be found to be with good cause.

It is almost always considered a personal and non-compelling reason for quitting.

If you are in New York, the precedents or the interpretation for this issues are under 1715. Number three provides a couple “special circumstances” that are exceptions.
