Which state should pay me unemployment benefits?

(Maryland)

I live in Maryland, work in Washington, DC and paid by a company in Virginia. I recently got laid off and I need to know which state is responsible for paying me unemployment benefits. Thank you

I can’t really say, because I don’t know which jurisdiction your employer paid unemployment taxes on the wages.

Personally, I’d file in the state where I live .. and let them figure this out for me if I couldn’t from just looking at pay or direct deposit info.

Cross your fingers it’s Virginia because DC’s unemployment system sucks!

Which State to Apply In

by: Torrence Johnson

Probably, more than likely, it will be Washington, DC because that is where you are working. To be on the safe side, apply in the State where you are working and the State where you live.
