Can a person collect temporary unemployement to care for an ill family member

by nicole

My boyfriend lives and work in Pa. He has sole custody of his 6 yr old child, who has been hospitalized for two weeks now with a rare ( potentialy fatal) disease. He has not been able to work since the day she got sick, and in turn has not been able to pay his bills. Is there anyway he can file for temporary unemployment in this situation? His job has told him that they will hold his job for up to a year, but he needs money.

Hi Nicole,

No. You must be able and available to collect unemployment .. and you must be unemployed.

There are only 6 states that have some kind of a program for temporary disability unemployment benefits .. and not even all of those would work for his circumstances
