Furloughed

by Cindy
(Orlando, FL)

My daughter has been with her company in Florida for 5 years and due to the economy, they have cut back on her hours--this week only got 25 hours and next week the entire shop (welders) has been furloughed. Can she get unemployment for the week she was furloughed?

Hi,

She can at least file a claim. She may actually be entitled to partial benefits if they have cut back on the hours she's working.

There is one little caveat though. Most states, including Florida, make anyone serve a one week unpaid waiting period before they will pay benefits. So she probably wouldn't get anything for the furloughed week .. but the waiting week would be out of the way and she may be able to collect partial benefits for the reduced hours and the total weekly benefit amount if they furlough her again.
