Unemployed Stories

I recently was laid off in California but now live in Nevada, which state do I contact?

by Melissa Tolton
(Las Vegas, NV USA)

I recently was laid off from a company in California, I will receive a severance until June 2009, once the severance runs out and I need to apply for unemployment which state do I file with?

Hi Melissa,

California. But be aware California will require you to register with Nevada for work because it demonstrates you are able and available for work and looking for work. It's just a requirement to receive unemployment. You'd do this through Nevada and be required to look for work as Nevada requires for a person on unemployment in Nevada. You could even do it now and make use of the resources available for finding a job.

I don't know if California will pay you directly or through Nevada.

I wish you well :-)

California paid directly

This happened to me several years ago, once I registered in the new state California paid me directly.
