Unemployed Stories

I voluntarily quit one part-time job to accept a different, better paying part time. Eligible for benefits?

I was working full-time for one company but was laid off. I started receiving unemployment benefits in January 2009. I accepted a part-time job in February 2009, so I received benefits for when my pay did not reach my weekly maximum amount. In October, I quit that part-time job to accept part-time work elsewhere, which paid better. My claim is currently under review for a "voluntary quit." Am I eligible to continue receiving unemployment benefits?

Hi,

You didn't tell me what state you were in, but I suggest you check your state's unemployment statutes because in some states better pay or more hours is good cause to quit.

If you're underemployed in the first place I would argue .. even if there weren't a statute that the better pay or more hours made it more "suitable work".

For crying out loud .. it's not only good for you .. it's good for an unemployment department. Of course the one it could hurt is the employer you quit .. but that's what non-charging provisions are for and that's the employer's responsibility to see that they aren't charged.

Thank you for your response. My unemployment benefits are with the state of Florida.

Hi,

I should have notice .. since you asked the question on the Florida page.

Florida is an awful state to find information for .. the only resource they have is the statutes.

My hours from my previous job were reduced from 40 to 5, with no chance of ever recieving full time work again with the company. I quit to take another part time job which might have a full time position in the future. They are now denying my benefits! I am appealing but I have no trust that they will give me my benefits back.Dont accept part time work in Florida....!

Oh, I'd like to hear more about that because if you are still working at the part-time job and your benefits are being denied .. my guess is it's through a temp agency??
