Why didn't i get my unemployment check?

by Cory
(Illinois)

I called into the unemployment to file my claim on Wednesday. Like always. and come Friday there was no check deposited into my checking like usual. Why? and what number for Illinois could i call to figure this out?

Hi Cory,

I have no idea why your unemployment check wasn't direct deposited, but per your request .. I did look for something that might help you figure it out.

I found a PDF regarding direct deposits and there is a phone number listed in question #9.

Who you gonna call, when you know something stinks?
by: Chris - Unemployment-Tips.com

That's a problem with unemployment insurance, who do you complain to .. to get some sort of resolution.

You touch me where I live .. and I don't live in Illinois, but a state .. west and little south of you by a few.

I'm not opposed to complaining when I know I'm in the right, otherwise, I wouldn't still be on this soapbox after ten very long and weird .. unprecedented years.

The only government office I know of and the one I tell people to call (I'd email first to document I reached out) when they believe a UI agency, or other state regulatory agency, (by association in your case) may be going off the rails of the actual governing laws, is the state office of the attorney general.

It's their job to enforce the laws and keep even a state unemployment department compliant with federal guidance .. for good reasons otherwise known as UI operational grants.

Unemployment insurance in all states, however,is a mandated "state/federal partnership" and state programs must comply, therefore, all that guidance which includes how a state UI agency, with it's own administrative laws, should conduct itself.

Given all states are rated on their performance and overseen by the ETA (Employment and Training Administration) who could investigate and possibly transfer a problem to the U.S. attorney general to deal with ..

Meaning, if I felt forced to escalate a complaint about what was reported to the IRS by a state on a 1099 for "income" taxing purposes .. by the state's attorney general office, I'd be complaining like the PITA I can be, to someone, and I'd probably start here if all else failed.

Mostly because I think it is our individual responsibility to not just give up our rights provided to us to exercise to not be victims .. if we choose not to be .. no matter who thinks they can get over on us, because of an assumption we are too ignorant of our rights to care about them!

Illinois in trouble again...
by: Anonymous

I found a comment from Kamakazi earlier on this board that mirrors exactly what happened to me. I received a 1099 from unemployment that stated that I had received over 9,000. dollars from unemployment but in truth I only got about 3,000. This is not coincidence it is a deliberate act of theft by a department of Illinois government. Illinois is not broke. The republican governor and the democratic state senate can't agree on the budget. Money has to come from somewhere. Who you gonna call. I would if I knew.

Response to ... Why didn't I receive my full amount
by: Chris - Unemployment-Tips.com

I'm clueless, unless maybe you've been collecting for a while and you've finally exhausted your benefit balance, or you worked some during the week, or weeks you claimed and those pt wages reduced the amount of benefits.

Other than this, you simply didn't mention anything that would allow me to help with any further explanation.

No Payment
by: Adriana

I normally get paid every WEDS, and this time I didnt get paid thinking because i submitted the paper a day late, it would take 1 day later than normally to get paid. But still nothing.

Will i be getting paid next Weds? Online it says I got paid, but doesn't give me a date of when. Should I be expecting the payment this upcoming Weds?

Adriana

I wouldn't expect to receive anything. Normally the reason being, there's generally speaking very little that would be good cause for certifying late.

But, like I've said before, there's no point in freaking out as it's not like you actually lost that week of benefits. It's more like that week of potential benefits has been moved to the backend of your claim.

Maximum duration of regular unemployment benefits is at most 26 weeks (except those states which have shortened the max duration, take Missouri for example).

But the length of a benefit year in which you can potentially collect the remainder of your claim's balance of benefits, is still 12 months.

Unless of course you think you had good cause for the late filing and can show good cause for being late .. yes, even one day at an unemployment hearing, or in a request for redetermination about the late filing.

To: No Payment
by: Chris - Unemployment-Tips.com

I'm sure some will think it's a silly question/comment .. coming your way but .. here goes.

Any chance you contacted your state unemployment dept. to ask why, or logged into an online unemployment account you may of been required to establish when you first applied for unemployment benefits to find out if the answer might be there .. such as a redetermination pending an investigation due to conditional eligibility?

Conditional eligibility issues are the reason they ask those questions each and every time an unemployed person re-certifies for each and every week they claim continuing unemployment benefits.

Kamakazi .. me!
by: Chris - Unemployment-Tips.com

If this were happening to me, I would follow through to contact IDES .. request copies of the benefit payments made to me during 2015 as well.

They keep those records as not only being crucial to the income they report to the IRS on the 1099 (which you state you have bank records to help you contradict), but the amounts of benefits paid to individuals showing on an employer's charge statement is what in the end, raises employer taxes.

It's the underlying reason employer's fight benefits. Because states use those records to justify the amount of an increase to the employer's tax experience rating.

Which is just one more way any state can also address lingering insolvent general UI funds by relying on what PEOPLE don't know about how UI works.

And should an employer end up reading this .. you must watch those charge statements and always appeal when you see something erroneous. Let's say when you compare unemployment hearing decisions with dates, that don't just deny someone's benefits on separation issues, but may also allow benefits when there is a corresponding non-charging provision for those exceptions to the basic disqualification rules in laws.

It's not just IDES in need of an audit, it's any acronym for a state unemployment insurance law agency ..

Now if only the Federal government would stop with all the initiative on overpayments as being fraud by the individual and be more objective when it comes to Benefit Accuracy Measurments (BAM)

2016 IDES need an audit
by: Kamakazi

IDES sent a 1099 that states that they paid over $9,000 in 2015 but the bank says they paid only $3,000. IRS thinks I am entitled to a refund of more than $900. My question at this point is: should I tell IRS that Illinois is screwing both of us? OK, that didn't take much thought.

To the frustrated person in Michigan
by: Chris - Unemployment-Tips.com

I'm at a loss to explain/tell you why your unemployment benefits haven't been direct deposited by the State of Michigan.

But maybe one of the UIA's problem resolution offices should be tried first.

Yet to receive unemployment payments

You're skipping over the necessity to first receive the initial non-monetary determination
by: Chris - Unemployment-Tips.com

Before you get an unemployment check, the person who interviewed you, must issue the second, otherwise called the non-monetary determination.

It's the one that tells you if you are allowed, or denied unemployment benefits based upon the available information they gather from both you and the employer.

It's not even been a month yet and therefore, I'd be patient for approx. another week.

If after thirty days (has to do with federal "guidelines" to resolve issues) and you haven't heard anything .. call the claims dept to find out what might be holding the "initial determination" up.

No check for 1/26/12
by: unemployed in Alsip

I was wondering if anyone out there who goes through the Harvey office, did not get their automatic deposit on 1/26/12.
I started work (thank God) but there is a holding week and my hours are the same as the unemployment office so now Im nervous to ask for time off to get this straight.

Same thing here in Maryland
by: Anonymous

I certified almost 3 weeks ago. Instead of my pay , I got a letter saying I had to do a phone interview on 12/7. I did the interview, and the guy said that it would take about 48 hrs to process my pay. It is now 12/16 and no pay.

Have you called them? I know that interviewer has to issue another determination as well before benefits are cleared. Have you gotten one of those yet?

Have you called this person to find out if that has been done and if so, why you haven't received your back benefits yet?

I certified on Monday 11/21/11 like I normal and come Wednesday 11/23/11.....nothing direct deposited, wondered if I goofed up with the certification so I tried again Thursday morning since I couldn't until then and the systems says I've already certified and it is in process. Now we are over drawn at the bank because of auto deducts. I still don't have an answer and looks like I won't until Monday when I can call but getting thru on the phone is like a trip down insanity lane. Anyone find out anything from the previous weeks?

They say they paid us, they didnt!
by: Anonymous

According to the Illinois website, it was deposited on the 10th. Hate to tell them but it most certainly was not. Now we are looking at over $100 in services fees for all of the automatic payments that were paid out on the 12th, and my husband is stuck out of town. No money, no food, no way to put gas in the car to get home.

I'm fuming!

Not sure when this post was made, but my husband also didnt get his. His certification date was 11/09/11. We expected a deposit on 11/11/11 but nothing came. I figured it may have something to do with Veterans Day, but it's now 11/12/11 and still nothing. Of course all I can do it sit here with a negative balance in my checking account and wait until Monday to find out what's going on.

Did anyone else not get a deposit?
