Unemployed Stories

Worked, wages cut, went to school, dropped out of school

by rick
(new york)

I was working for a company for 2-3 months before they cut my wages in half. I worked there for 6 more months before quitting to go back to school for grad school. However was let go by the program and now left unemployed 9 months ago. I still haven't been able to find a job. Can I still receive unemployment benefits? Please help

Hi,

It's very doubtful that you have sufficient wages in your base period to qualify and the reason you quit the job .. to go back to school is not a qualifying reason for voluntarily quitting.

And to top it off .. you've been unemployed ever since, so you wouldn't have earned any wages in subsequent employment to purge the voluntary quit disqualification.

At least, this is how I see it.

Chris

my only option was school

I had no better choice but to go back to grad school. with my wages cut in half, it was barely enough to survive on. I work for the company for 9 months total and accumulated at least $23000. Isn't that enough?

Quitting a job to go back to grad school is disqualifying. That was nine months ago ..

It may very well be possible that you have the qualifying wages, but the merit decision is what has the potential to disable you from accessing the benefits.

Rick, we're not talking about what makes good sense when it comes to making personal decision .. we're talking about an ability to collect unemployment benefits per what NY State has to say about it.
